Why matte paper crushes your blacks

Put the same photograph on a glossy sheet and on a cotton matte sheet, and the matte print will look softer, grayer, less alive in the shadows. It isn't the printer, and it isn't your file. It's physics — and it's measurable.

Dmax: how dark a paper can go

Every paper has a deepest printable black, its Dmax. Measured in CIELAB lightness, a good glossy or baryta sheet reaches around L*4 — a black that feels bottomless. A cotton matte sheet physically cannot get there: the ink sits in a fibrous, light-scattering surface, and the deepest black lands around L*15–20. Every tone in your image that lives below that line gets pressed into the same paper black. Whole passages of shadow detail — feather texture, the folds of a dark coat — simply merge.

The wrong fix: more contrast

The instinctive move is to crank global contrast. That's usually a mistake. A steep S-curve pushes the deep shadows darker — sending even more of the image below the paper's floor — while flattening the delicate mid-tones that matte papers render beautifully. In our own calibration work with a veteran fine-art printer, the working range for global contrast on matte came out to roughly +8–15%, never more.

The right fix: open the shadows, respect the floor

The correct preparation does three quieter things:

1. Shadow-open. Detail that would sink below the paper's black point gets lifted into the printable range — the opposite of an S-curve down there. On our line this is driven by measurement: we round-trip the image through the paper's ICC profile and read exactly how far its shadows will lift, then compensate for a portion of that.

2. A black point just above solid. Anchoring blacks to pure 0 wastes the paper's floor and crushes texture. We keep the deepest black a breath above solid so paper grain and shadow texture survive.

3. Tonal separation, gently. A modest, measured push — sized to what the profile says this specific image loses on this specific stock.

Matte's real problem is not contrast. It's Dmax. Treat the disease, not the symptom.

Done right, a cotton matte print doesn't fight its softness — it uses it. The shadows stay readable, the mid-tones glow, and the print looks like it was always meant for that paper.
